Juliette's Choice

A mouthwash or therapeutic rinse can complement brushing and flossing, but it’s not a license to abandon thorough brushing and interdental cleaning. Mouthwashes fall into two main categories - those that are cosmetic and simply provide a nice fresh minty taste and those that are therapeutic, designed to address a specific problem. Mouthwash : Xerostom for Dry Mouth

Xerostom is a mouthwash and oral spray specifically designed to alleviate the symptoms of dry mouth and burning mouth syndrome. Dry Mouth, also known as xerostomia, is a common and distressing problem affecting many people and nearly always associated with a health complaint.Your mouth is kept lubricated and protected by saliva produced by the salivary glands. Dry Mouth should not be ignored, apart from making life miserable, it could lead to a rapid increase in dental decay and an increased risk of mouth infection.

Dry Mouth is most commonly a side effect of prescribed medication or treatment for another complaint such as: High blood pressure, chemotherapy and radiotherapy to the head and neck, Sjögren's syndrome, Rheumatoid arthritis. In these cases saliva substitutes are most commonly used to provide patients with soothing relief. Less severe cases of dry mouth may also be caused by: Breathing through the mouth, stress or anxiety, smoking and drinking alcohol.

It is important that a saliva substitute should replicate normal saliva as closely as possible. The solution should remain neutral, as an increase in acidity in the mouth is undesirable as this can lead to increased soreness and further increase the risk of tooth damage.

Xerostom is uniquely formulated withVitamin E as an antioxidant and is effective in the treatment of mucositis. Allantoin prevents tissues from cracking, Vitamin B5 soothes and reduces water loss through the edpidermis, potassium diminishes dental sensitivity and pain. Xerostome is non acidic, does not contain citric acid, is detergent free, sugar free and alcohol free. Suitable for diabetics and vegetarians. Xerostom provides a physical protective barrier against dessication, tooth decay, infection and also acts as an effective lubricant. Juliette will advise on timing and dose.
